Nonintrusive Load Monitoring (NILM)

Energymanagement and saving efforts were hindered in the past because the causes for increased consumption could not be derived directly from the measured overall consumption. The data of daily, weekly or monthly energy consumption had to be interpreted elaborately and questioned in order to be able to define source-based efficiency measurements. A more individual acquisition of consumption data is basically achieved by submetering, although additional measurement points are necessary. Especially the device-specific energy consumption analysis can considerable extra costs. This is where NILM comes in: The Nonintrusive Load Monitoring System is able to separate the energy consumption of several appliances with only one point of measurement. In comparison to ordinary submetering systems the installation, maintenance and hardware costs are considerably lower while at the same time a much higher level of detail of the consumption analysis is achieved. In addition to the overall consumption, a detailed list of energy consumption of the connected single appliances is obtained. By providing the data in real time, measurements can be taken quickly in order to avoid surprises with the electricity bill.
